Students Explore Medical Careers at BHC

The Area Health Education Center (AHEC) of South Central Montana works with local hospitals and high school counselors to provide students with a chance to learn about careers within the healthcare field. The REACH (Research and Explore Awesome Careers in Healthcare) is a one-day program where students visit a local hospital to explore healthcare fields through a variety of stations and activi-ties. This year students from Broadwater and Three Forks High School came to Broadwater Health Center (BHC) for the day.
Students were divided into smaller groups rotating through “stations” that included the laboratory, imaging (x-ray, CT, mammogra-phy), dietary/nutritional services, activities/social services, nursing, rehabilitation (physical and occupational therapy) and IT (Information Technology) departments. At each station BHC professionals started with a brief description of their department, how they got into healthcare and the educa-tional journey involved. The remaining and majority of time at each station was then devoted to fun hands-on activities led by the BHC healthcare professionals. The hands-on activities are designed to give the students a more realistic impres-sion of the particular healthcare career and give them a true sense of some of the functions performed by each department.
It’s a fun and educational day for the students. REACH is generally open to 9th and 10th grade students, but this varies depending on the size of the school and participating hospital. The program is at no cost to the student but students must submit an application to be considered for acceptance into the one day program. Each student also receives a scrub top with the REACH logo and a certificate of completion. The day was made possi-ble by Natascha Robinson of the South Central AHEC and the Montana Hospital Association, the school counselors from Broadwater and Three Forks High Schools and the BHC staff. What a great and interactive way to learn about healthcare careers.
