Garage Sale Raises $2,217 For Kirscher Memorial Fund
Submitted by vsample on Tue, 09/06/2016 - 10:04
Barbara Kirscher passed away on May 25, 2016, and the Broadwater Com-munity Health Foundation (BCHF) established a “Barb Kirscher Memorial Education Fund” in her honor. A garage sale was held on August 19-20 to benefit the fund and $2,217.77 was raised in just two days. The majority of the funds were items sold at the sale but $202 was earned from items that were raffled. These included a framed photograph of the Canton Church donated by Marcia Bieber and 10 pounds of Alaskan salmon, halibut, cod and rock fish caught/donated by Ron and Mary Ann Salladay.
An anonymous donor had agreed to match the first $2500 collected (doubling the fund if that amount could be reached this year). With these funds plus other funds donated (BCHF $500, the Kirscher family $255 and the hospital auxiliary $94) the group exceeded the $2500 needed and the funds to establish the memorial have been doubled!
There are many special people to thank. First and foremost, thank you to the Kirscher family for their support and donations, including items that belonged to Barbara. Also deserving special
thanks are Judy and Jack Gillespie for soliciting donations and packing them up and trucking them to the sale, Judy Schenk and Cora Lee Horne for working the sale and Pat McNieve for working set up and both days of the sale. Broadwater Health Center Head of Maintenance, Richard Majszak, as well as the hospital staff also deserve a big thanks for clearing space and providing additional sale items.
We thank the entire, amazing com-munity for their generous donations (including the anonymous matching donor) and for patronizing the sale and sharing their stories about Barb. We also can’t forget Jackie Kynett who worked continuously on the project and held everything together. This would never have happened without her. And thank you to Barb herself who we all felt was watching over us the whole time. We hope she is smiling on us now. We love and miss her.
The “Barb Kirscher Memorial Education Fund” will offer scholarships for locals pursing medical education and/or training. If you missed the garage sale and would like to make a monetary donation to the fund please contact BCHF board member Judy Gillespie at 266-3861.
